Paul R. Popovic

Counsel

Mr. Popovic litigates all aspects of Colorado workers’ compensation claims, including subrogation, penalty claims, medical billing disputes, and appeals to the Industrial Claim Appeals Office and Court of Appeals.  He has litigated cases in all venues throughout Colorado.  Mr. Popovic represents businesses of all sizes in the defense of workers’ compensation claims, from national companies to small business owners, and helps them navigate the specifics of these state systems, including statutory and procedural rule requirements, Medicare compliance, and loss mitigation.  Mr. Popovic has served as the lead and supervising attorney on complex claims involving fatalities and traumatic injuries that interact with civil tort claims, balancing the varied interests of his clients. 

Mr. Popovic also has helped insurers and employers develop and implement company-wide policies, procedures, and best practice standards for the most effective defense of workers’ compensation claims, and regularly provides training and presentations to employers and insurers across the nation on issues relating to workers’ compensation and subrogation law.  Additionally, Mr. Popovic spent several years working in-house at a title insurance company and is experienced with insurance coverage analysis, due diligence in connection with commercial and residential property instruments, and overall risk assessment in real estate deals.

Madisyn Schaus joined Hall & Evans, LLC as an Associate in 2025. Ms. Schaus’ practice centers on premises liability, products liability, professional liability, and workers’ compensation.

Ms. Schaus earned her JD from the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, William S. Boyd School of Law after receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of Nevada.  While in law school, she was a Legal Intern and a Legal Extern with the Clark County Public Defender’s Office.

Sylvia Grace Acosta

Counsel

Sylvia Grace Acosta has over 25 years of wide-ranging litigation experience.  Ms. Acosta’s current practice includes insurance defense, construction defect, dram shop, premises liability, insurance bad faith litigation, and coverage disputes.  She also handles commercial litigation, real estate matters, estate planning, and workers’ compensation.   

Ms. Acosta is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Utah, S.J. Quinney College of Law, where she instructs and mentors students on arbitration and negotiation. She is an active member and Past President of the Utah Minority Bar Association, and active with the Women Lawyers of Utah and Utah Center for Legal Inclusion.

Aaron Helmberger

Senior Associate

Aaron Helmberger’s practice focuses on defending employers and insurance carriers in a variety of workers’ compensation matters.

Before joining Hall & Evans, Mr. Helmberger was an Associate at a small workers’ compensation firm in the Denver area.  Prior to his workers’ compensation practice, Mr. Helmberger was a Deputy State Public Defender at the La Junta Regional Office of the Colorado Office of the Public Defender where he handled a wide range of criminal law-related matters, from simple petty offences to misdemeanors and violent crimes.

While attending the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, Mr. Helmberger was a Chancellor’s Scholarship recipient, was a Clinic Fellow for the Criminal Defense Clinic, and interned with the Colorado Office of the State Public Defender.

Kurt R. Bonds

Member

Kurt Bonds has practiced in Las Vegas, Nevada since 1997, focusing on litigation and transactional law. His litigation practice includes trucking and transportation matters, hospitality & retail, premises liability, employment, products liability, insurance defense, workers’ compensation defense, and toxic tort law. On the transactional side, Mr. Bonds handles corporate law, business transactions, banking law, contracts, real estate matters, and homeowners’ association matters.

Mr. Bonds serves as a court appointed Arbitrator for the Eighth Judicial District Court in Clark County and as a Referee/Arbitrator for the Nevada Real Estate Division. He also teaches risk reduction classes at the Greater Las Vegas Association of Realtors on various issues including trademark, licensing, advertising, and contracts.

An active participant in the legal community, Mr. Bonds is a member of the State Bar of Nevada, International Bar Association, American Inns of Court, the Clark County Bar Association, the Community Associations Institute, and the Supreme Court Historical Society. He is a frequent seminar speaker on transactional law issues, estate planning, and legal issues affecting homeowners’ associations and management companies.
